Jamie Smart has been one of my biggest teachers when it comes to NLP. I’ve bought most of his recordings of his trainings to learn from over the years, and it was a dream come true for me to attend a live training with him earlier this year. And what was EVEN COOLER than that was having him on a live call and sharing him with all of my peeps yesterday!
Jamie has the most amazing talent of being able to take complex technical NLP concepts and tools and make them simple, and then apply them in a way that uncovers just how rich they are, and he does it with authenticity, fun and a genuine love for other people.

The Twitter Stream
I use the twitter hashtag #agilelife for my monthly free calls. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Twitter hashtags, you can “tag” a conversation stream by adding a hashtag to the end, and then people can search for that hashtag and they’ll find all the tweets relating to that conversation. It’s a great way to keep “group notes” on an event and see what other people are highlighting/ finding useful.
Here’s our Twitter stream from yesterday’s call with Jamie (I’ve cleaned up the spelling and grammar a bit and left out the repeated tweets to make it easier to follow):
@NyssaSmith RT @cathduncan Change is such a universal part of our everyday lives.
@cathduncan Some things change easily & some things don’t. It can vary for different people & using different change methods.
@PassionJourney “Quitting work is easier than quitting smoking.” that made me laugh!
@cathduncan Change is just an example of learning.
@cathduncan Sometimes the benefits of NOT changing outweigh the benefits of changing.
@NyssaSmith RT @cathduncan Jamie says: you can’t NOT change!
@NyssaSmith RT @cathduncan Jamie says: every behaviour has a positive intention.
@cathduncan Things that don’t work are evolved away.
@cathduncanPeople aren’t broken.
@NyssaSmith RT @cathduncan We need to acknowledge the positive intention for NOT changing, so we can end the war on ourself.
@melhocking I never thought about all the small subtle changes we make over a lifetime (the ones you don’t “credit” as change) hmmm.
@cathduncan Say “thank you” to your unconscious mind for keeping you surviving/ what it’s been doing for you.
@melhocking Accepting doesn’t mean approving. Be on YOUR side.
@cathduncan If you’re having a fight with yourself, someone’s going to lose, and it’s going to be you.
@cathduncan People will always take the best choice that they perceive as being available.
@cathduncan Ask yourself, “what’s that part doing for you?” is there a better way to get that benefit?
@melhocking RT rather than thinking, is it right or wrong, consider what RESULTS you’re getting and what the purpose is.
@cathduncan Jeffrey Darmer said his murders were the only way he could get a connection. All behaviour has a positive intention.
@cathduncan It’s our nature as humans to grow & evolve.
@NyssaSmith There’s always a purposeful intention. Even if they are not conscious of it. The behavior is purposeful. What’s it doing for you?
@cathduncan You can get better results if you stop fighting yourself & accept all parts of yourself.
@cathduncan Language: how you communicate with yourself and how you communicate with others. How you use your language is powerful!
@NyssaSmith How you talk to yourself is powerful!
@NyssaSmith Successful results come from speaking to yourself in encouraging & positive ways.
@cathduncan You have a mind, but you’re not your mind. Ask your mind, “what are you saying now?”
@cathduncan The things we say to ourselves shapes our reality – experiment and see what happens when you change your language.
@NyssaSmith @JamieSalad “The things that you say to yourself really have an impact.”
@cathduncan Say thank you to whatever you learn about yourself in respect of your language.
@NyssaSmith @JamieSalad “Start saying good things to yourself.”
@melhocking you may get some weird signals when you start speaking good things. say thank you. it’s you getting used to the new way!
@cathduncan Our bodies have homestatic loops that try to preserve the current reality. It sets off alarms when you make changes.
@melhocking I’ve so been there! RT @cathduncan As soon as you venture out of the comfort zone, the body sets off the alarm.
@cathduncan But that doesn’t mean it’s not safe – it just means you’re growing.
@NyssaSmith @JamieSalad “When you start feeling uncomfortable, that’s when you need to press the gas to get out of our comfort zone.”
@cathduncan Make it easier to change: create a core of familiarity in your life – a regular practice.
@TheBaumGroup RT @cathduncan When you get the “I don’t feel like it” feeling, it means your change is working ~~~so go with the change?
@TheBaumGroup RT @cathduncan As soon as you venture out of the comfort zone, the body sets off the alarm ~~~when u r in touch w/your body.
@cathduncan Make change easier: get more used to it by changing small things in your life.
@NyssaSmith Jamie says: Embrace difference!
@cathduncan Getting familiar with unfamiliarity, getting comfortable with getting out of your comfort zone.
@LaurieHawley Create a core of familiarity in your life – as long as this happens on a regular basis, you can change other things.
@LaurieHawley Change can be easier if we practice getting familiar with the unfamiliar.
@melhocking pay attention to how you respond to change or something new.
@cathduncan dealing with perfectionism: failure is only possible if you set yourself a time limit.
@NyssaSmith Jamie says he’s a recovering perfectionist, too!
@cathduncan What if you were willing to take as long as it needs to do that thing?
@agelessexplorer RT @cathduncan: perfectionists don’t realise how much they miss out on learning along the way, from mistakes.
@TheBaumGroupRT @cathduncan “perfectionists don’t realise how much they miss…learning along the way, from mistakes~~~So true Cath
@cathduncan To live each moment fully is a form of success.
@NyssaSmith RT @cathduncan Watch out for the “I’ll be happy when…” disease.
@cathduncan What would you want if you didn’t have to be unhappy about not getting it?
@cathduncan If you woke up and a miracle had occurred, what would you notice is different?
@NyssaSmith RT @cathduncan When you take action, all sorts of things can happen that could never happen when you were just thinking about it.
@TheBaumGroupRT @cathduncan “when you take action, all sorts of things…happen that…never happen when you…just think about it”~~~Yes indeed.
@melhocking You HAVE to start. Take action.
@cathduncan Our natural state is happiness and well-being. we don’t need stuff in order to feel happy.
@cathduncan It’s a lie that our good feelings come from external stuff. Good feelings come from the inside.
@melhocking when things fall away it could be that you didn’t really need that. we often think happiness comes from stuff.
@cathduncan How to increase your happiness and wellbeing: realise it’s yr natural state, realise you’ll get better results from good feelings.
@melhocking RT @cathduncan: focus on your wellbeing – it makes it easier to change when you’re in a relaxed, happy state!
@gilrol Unhappy ppl want what they want because they think it will make them happy. Happy ppl want what they want because they want it.
@cathduncan Bad feelings are a sign that your thinking is distorted.
@TheBaumGroup RT @cathduncan What you resist persists, what you accept dissolves~~~Yes, indeed.
@TheBaumGroup RT @cathduncan embrace resistance ~~~Acceptance removes the stress and struggle as does accepting ‘not accepting resistance.’
@cathduncan Mastery is a PROCESS, and it’s a non-linear process, mostly plateaus with a few sudden increases in skill.
@cathduncan Many people get despondent on the plateau, and that gets them stuck.
@NyssaSmith @JamieSalad Sudden increase in skill…then a plateau.
@NyssaSmith @JamieSalad Mastery takes a while.
@NyssaSmith RT @cathduncan Jamie says: mastery takes time! stay at it! See yourself as a lifelong learner.
@cathduncan Urgency creates stress. Commit to lifelong learning and relax into your change.
@NyssaSmith Reading, video AND audio helps the learning process.
@cathduncan Meet people at their map of the world, rather than telling them what they should be thinking.
@NyssaSmith RT @cathduncan Embrace resistance.
@flowchainsensei@cathduncan Also applies to Teams.
@cathduncan Dealing with people who don’t want you to change: remember that other people are just trying to keep things familiar.
@cathduncan We’ll often prioritise familiarity over progress. As you change, you change the system & other pple might not like it.
@gilrol RT @cathduncan: you become like who you hang around with!
@cathduncan Transformational! accept other people exactly as they are.
@cathduncan When you make big changes, it’s not uncommon for other people to slip away because you have less in common.
@NyssaSmith @cathduncan Dealing with people who don’t want you to change: remember that other people are just trying to keep things familiar.
@gilrol RT @cathduncan: Let go of the need for your family to accept you. lead the way and accept them first!
@obrown RT @cathduncan: Let go of the need for your family to accept you. lead the way and accept them first!
@cathduncan To some extent, we’re all pioneers, all living our lives for the first time.
@cathduncan You have your own internal guidance system.
@TheBaumGroup RT @cathduncan Trust that well-being and wisdom is your birthright. Don’t think so much~~~works for us
@TheBaumGroupRT @cathduncan Just keep tuning into your body to see what you want~~~works for us
@NyssaSmith Jamie says: what you focus on increases.
@TheBaumGroupRT @cathduncan “Keep saying thank you to whatever…you get from within ~~Does this work for you Cath?
@NyssaSmith Thank your positive intention for whatever it is doing for you. Once you acknowledge it, now you can work on changing it.
