Damien offered some really profound and perspective-shifting ideas about the role of our core selves in our work, challenging us to put the discovery and expression of our core selves before everything else in our business. Unlike so many people who say, “Follow your bliss and the money will follow,” Damien’s perspective is, “Follow your bliss and you’ll be following your bliss… and then you’ll have what you want, regardless of whether the money follows.”
I got so absorbed in the call that I didn’t tweet along as much as I usually do. Listen to the call recording to get the full story of Damien’s near-death experience and how it transformed his approach to life and work, to hear some very different perspectives on the role of money, and to find out why it’s so important to question everything…

Our twitter Notes
We use the twitter hashtag #agilelife for my monthly free calls. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Twitter hashtags, you can “tag” a conversation stream by adding a hashtag to the end, and then people can search for that hashtag and they’ll find all the tweets relating to that conversation. It’s a great way to keep “group notes” on an event and see what other people are highlighting, finding useful, and building on with additional comments.
Here’s our Twitter stream from yesterday’s call with Damien (I’ve cleaned up the spelling and grammar a bit and left out most of the repeated tweets to make it easier to follow):
cathduncan: @damiensenn says “nothing is true”
bigbrightbulb: Ya gotta love a speaker whose first words are: “Nothing I say is True.” Or at least, I do
cathduncan: You don’t have to experience major trauma to become enlightened, but it does help
cathduncan: You have to “die” to discover our true self
bigbrightbulb: Interesting idea: rethink all (like, ALL) assumptions…put everything up for investigation & renegotiation
cathduncan: Finding your true self is a process of subtraction, not addition of knowledge
cathduncan: If you have a sense of what your purpose might be, explore it, research in that arena, experience it
cathduncan: Be willing to move out of your comfort zone and show up, share with the world
bigbrightbulb: Be peaceful with the talents you have TODAY. Don’t need more letters after name, etc. Work with your gifts (and limitations too)
silviajohnson: RT @cathduncan begin from where you are <– love that
SHurleyHall: RT @bigbrightbulb: be peaceful with the talents you have TODAY. Don’t need more letters after name, Work with yr gifts (& limits)
cathduncan: It’s fine if you’re not called to be an entrepreneur. You can express your core self thru any work
cathduncan: When you’re awake, you’ll find it too hard to pretend/ do stuff that’s not your core self
cathduncan: We’re living in an emergent universe – see your purpose like that – emergent & expansive
cathduncan: Your purpose isn’t a fixed thing, it evolves all the time
cathduncan: Fear of uncertainty is linked to death, so we often don’t really want to go there
cathduncan: When you realize that you’re already dead, you can begin living
cathduncan: Be equally happy to accept “failure” and “success.” They’re one in the same
cathduncan: With goal-setting we often get very stuck on the specific results
reachingdreams: RT @cathduncan your purpose isn’t a fixed thing, it evolves all the time
cathduncan: Goal-setting can help you achieve things, but take care that it’s not restricting your core self
cathduncan: Look underneath the things you think you want
cathduncan: What do you hope achieving your goals will get you? What feeling? peace?
cathduncan: Don’t let goal setting obstruct your experience of peace
bigbrightbulb: Part of his suffering was hyper-managing his life/career to look good to others. Releasing that, at peace with what he is and has
cathduncan: From the place of deep peace, the things I want tend to emerge, but without force
cathduncan: And even if those results don’t show up, I’ve got what I want – peace
cathduncan: Love is constantly wanting to express itself in the world
jeremymeyers: RT @cathduncan: look underneath the things you think you want
cathduncan: You don’t have to be motivated by fear – love is a powerful motivational force
bigbrightbulb: Don’t ~always~ be projecting into the future for what you think you want. Don’t avoid Now. Be present with your work and life
cathduncan: Make your days spacious to allow your core self to come through
positivepresent: RT @cathduncan don’t let goal setting obstruct your experience of peace
cathduncan: Is your self esteem linked to the flow of money in your life?
bigbrightbulb: Don’t let your self-worth be tied to your fluctuating bank balance. YOU are not how much cash you have. Your value is beyond $.
ChristiaanH: RT @cathduncan: is your self esteem linked to the flow of money in your life? (seems true for most, at least on the surface..)
bigbrightbulb: @cathduncan’s call with @DamienSenn just about made my day. Facing life & death, valuing now, uncovering personal truth. Whew.
cathduncan: Big thanks to @DamienSenn for an awesome, thought-provoking call this evening!
cathduncan: I got so involved in listening to @DamienSenn I couldn’t tweet along much – you’ll have to listen to the call rec to get it all!
And thanks to everyone else who joined the call by phone, webcast or twitter!

The Bottom-line on Nick Williams’ “The Work We Were Born To Do”
If this call with Damien, and the ideas of questioning everything you’ve been taught about the way work “should” be and of putting who you’re BEING and your core self at the front of everything you do in life, work and business resonated with you, then you’ll love the Bottom-line on Nick Williams’ powerful book, “The Work We Were Born To Do: Find The Work You Love and Love the Work You Do.”
In the Bottom-line on the The Work We Were Born To Do, you’ll learn:
- How to identify the specific parts of yourself that have been blinding you from what you really want, holding you back or sabotaging your efforts to do the work you were born to do… and how to get those parts working on your side.
- How to avoid falling into the 6 common spirit-squashing ways of thinking about work, and free yourself from those limitations, to find or create your ideal work scenario – even if it’s never existed before!
- How to immunize yourself against the destructive impact of societal pressure about what work you “should” do and how you “should” do it, in order to be doing meaningful and worthwhile work.
- How to anchor yourself to your true values, so that you can express those in your work – even in situations that conflict with what’s important to you.
- The one most important attitude towards work (that almost nobody talks about in a wok context) that’ll make all the difference in finding work you love and loving the work you do… and how to develop that attitude.
- How to protect yourself mentally and emotionally in stressful or negative work environments, so that you can enjoy your work anyway.
- How to know whether you could love your work by just changing your attitude to your work, or whether you’re in the wrong work altogether.
- How to create an enduring sense of personal security about your work, in these turbulent times.
- How to be agile, flexible and responsive in your work, so that you can always adapt and use both the good and bad experiences in life to create the work experiences you want and be more of the person you want to be.
- How to drive your work forward through inspired action – without using goals!
- How to create your own definition of success so that you can enjoy the life and work you want.
When you buy the Bottom-line on The Work We Were Born To Do, you’ll get:
- A 45min-60min audio Bottom-line lecture, highlighting and explaining the best ideas and change tools from Nick Williams’ book, “The Work We Were Born To Do,” including exercises to guide you through coaching yourself to apply it to your own life.
- A pdf manual and digital workbook, including a transcript of the Bottom-line lecture and self-coaching exercises to guide you to apply the ideas to your own life.
- A 60min recording of my interview with the author, Nick Williams.
- Email Coaching every other day, for 6 weeks, coaching you to consider 1 question or complete 1 task each day, to help you to apply the ideas and change tools.
