One of the most common things I help people with is decisions around finding or creating work that’s aligned with their values and life purpose – doing “the work they were born to do,” as Nick Williams (author of “The Work We Were Born To Do: Find the Work You Love and Love the Work You Do”). With the multiple opportunities available to us all, it’s no surprise that so many people struggle with knowing that they want and deciding what work they’re born to do.
So, when I had the opportunity to interview Nick Williams, for the Bottom-line on “The Work We Were Born To Do,” I made sure to ask him what his thoughts are on how to tell whether you’re doing the work you were born to do. Here’s what he said about that (click “play” on the audio player below):

It’s really that simple!
Imagine that! If it makes you happy, it’s what you’re meant to do. We’ve created loads of different tests to identify personality traits and aptitudes, we think hard and analyze pros and cons of each opportunity, and it’s generally accepted that you should rational, left-brain-directed ways of making decisions – especially when it comes to the really important life decisions, like the work we do, life partners, where we live, decisions about children, and so on. And yet we have a super-simple way of knowing what’s right for us – our emotional compass. And our emotional compass is with us all the time, and it’s free!
In next month’s Bottom-line, the Bottom-line on Dan Pink’s book, A Whole New Mind, I’ll share more about how we’ve been socialized into thinking that left-brain-directed thinking is the superior way of thinking, and why this is no longer the case, and I’ll give you some really great ways you can develop your right-brain-directed thinking and begin to use your whole mind in making these kinds of life decisions. In the meantime, I have some really exciting news…
The New Bottom-line Bookclub Membership Site has launched!
It feels like I’ve been talking about “new developments” to come with the Bottom-line Bookclub for ages, and finally we’re there. Head on over to the new site, where you’ll see the following changes:
- There’s a new structure to the Bottom-line Bookclub. You can now choose to join the club through either a Silver Membership or a Gold Membership, or you can buy individual Bottom-lines on books of your choice. Check it out over here.
- The price has dropped significantly! Check it out over here.
- Members will be able to login whenever they want, to download their Bottom-line programs – no more searching for the email I sent with the download link!
- The new affiliate program is open for applications, and I’ve raised the affiliate commission. You can find out more about that over here.
Why the changes?
A while back ran a survey, to find out what you want from the Bottom-line Bookclub, and what’s most important to you. I’ve also been chatting to current members, and finding out what they get the most value from, how they’re using it, what they’d love to change, and so on. And I’ve gotten great feedback from some of my affiliates. All your feedback has been SO helpful – thank you! So these changes have mostly evolved from your feedback, but that’s not all…
I’ve been having some significant perspective shifts myself over the past few months, and I’ve realized I want to play a bigger game. When I first structured and priced the Bottom-line Bookclub earlier this year, I realize now that I wasn’t thinking very big at all – I was really seeing it as an intimate gathering and so the structure and price was based on expecting a fairly small group of people to get on board.
Over the past few months, I’ve had the following realizations:
- I’ve been able to tweak it into a model that easily scales up without lowering the quality of the programs, so I can reach more people.
- I’ve built a model that allows me to reach more people at no extra cost. So the skies the limit when it comes to the number of members who can get on board.
- I’ve been able to cut my current costs – I recently found membership site software that’s much cheaper than the one I’d previously considered using. (I used Wishlist’s WordPress Plugin, if your interested.)
- I’ve had a few “big players” come on board as affiliates, which helped me to realize that it could grow so much bigger than I’d previously anticipated.
This all means that I’ve been able to significantly lower my price, without dropping any of the value, which I’m really thrilled about. I hope you will be too.
Head on over and check it out for yourself…

I think that sums it up pretty well. If you’re doing what makes you happy, then it’s right for you. I’m sure even these people are in the minority unfortunately.

Anything you do day in and day out becomes ‘old’ periodically, but when you’re doing what you know you’re suppose to do, a short rejuvenating break will revive the excitement.

@Gordie: you following your bliss too, then? Sure looks like it!
@Heather: You’re right, we can still burn ourselves out doing stuff we love, and sometimes it is necessary to take a little breather, get a change of scenery, and re-ignite ourselves. This tends to be less of a problem that when we’re doing stuff we don’t love, though…
