While I’ve been sanding and varnishing this week on our volunteer building project, I’ve had a lot of time to think, and I wanted to share with you something that’s been on my mind ever since Max Kaizen spoke with me about the idea of unleashing your genius by having “good taste in problems.” My flip batteries were low, so the recording cut out a few times towards the end, and finally gave up the ghost as I finished the last word (which was “genius”). It might be a bit scrappy, but the gist of it is there!

So here we go…

I’d love to hear your thoughts: what makes for “good taste” in a problem for you? What sort of problems will you choose to focus your attention, energy and resources on in 2010?

  1. Whoa, I was worried that you we’re going to blow away in that stiff wind!

Good stuff: Here’s what I got regarding what makes a good problem to focus on:

    1) Is it a problem that matters to other people? (love this one)

    2) Does it take me outside of my current comfort zone?

    3) is there some element of creativity involved in solving this problem?

Cath, do you mind if I steal all of your criteria and do the exact same thing for myself this year? Thanks :)

One other thing, in the beginning of the piece you spoke about your life purpose and that you are always evolving and changing and forever curious. I have a theory on this.

I think our life purpose is a moving target.

I like to say that what I am doing (Big Goal Hunting) is my life purpose RIGHT NOW. At this time in my life, what I’m doing— setting big goals in my life and challenging myself to accomplish them in a ridiculously short time frame—is exactly what I was born to do. RIGHT NOW.

I give myself fully to my current life purpose, but at the same time I’m open to anything that may come.

Sorry if that sounded a bit self serving, I just wanted to show an example of my theory and of course promote my website :) :):)

2010 is going to be magical… in so many ways it feels like it already is.

    Hi Cath.

I am a turned onto to purpose a lot right now. I think you the are articulating good taste in problems. I think volunteering gives you a fresh perspective on this. I think we can be caught in the thick of thin thins. The focus is the attention. I think if we meditate we focus on our breath but if we have that choice in meditation and that is easy then it is easy to choose what we do focus on.

Volunteering and Travel can take you away and focus clarity on what is important. Creativity is a good carriage too and one every business person has used.
